In 2023, Microsoft introduced Copilot, an AI assistant for Microsoft Office and other Microsoft products. Originally, this was only available for enterprise customers in orders of 300 or more licenses. Recently though, Microsoft has opened this offering to all customers, so let’s take a look at how Copilot could improve your employees’ productivity in Office.

Copilot for Word
Copilot in Word can take your existing data and transform it, whether it’s into a brand new proposal or a client brief. Copilot can help edit your copy, making it sound more professional or casual. It can take data from Excel and generate text documents based on your input. On-the-fly document analysis allows you to ask specific questions about a larger document and have Copilot highlight the relevant answers.

Copilot for Excel
Copilot in Excel can help with formatting, charting, sorting and more, based on simple, human language requests. For those who aren’t Excel wizards with formulas and graphs, this can be a huge benefit. Have Copilot plot a graph based on this year’s data, then give it a hypothetical change to predict potential growth for next year, and it will automatically generate the new data and graph it for you. Copilot can examine a large dataset and highlight the critical insights, then pull that data into a new sheet.

Copilot for PowerPoint
Copilot can create PowerPoint presentations from data in Word or Excel, generating professional-quality slides, complete with speaker notes. Use Copilot to spice up existing slides with slick transitions and effects.

Copilot for Outlook
Copilot in Outlook can analyze long email chains and summarize key points. It can also draft emails for you, based on data you give it such as Excel files – it can even change the tone of the email from informal to professional, based on who it’s going to.

Copilot for Teams
Copilot can keep meeting notes and answer questions live in-meeting about what was discussed, who said what, and what general feelings are on any given topic. It can also produce action items for any topics discussed that have yet to be resolved and provide suggestions on how to address those topics based on what was said in the meeting.

Microsoft has assured subscribers that Copilot uses the same security as the rest of Microsoft 365, with all data to and from Copilot encrypted. Microsoft Copilot is now available to add to any Microsoft 365 Business Standard or Business Premium subscription, at an annual cost of $360/user.
