If you’ve done any shopping for a computer or computer parts lately, you’ve likely experienced some sticker shock at the high costs across the board. Some components, such as RAM (memory), have gone up 300% or more in price in the last year. But what’s driving these high prices? And are they likely to come down any time soon?

One of the biggest reasons for increased prices is AI (Artificial Intelligence). As AI usage becomes more widespread and heavily advertised by the biggest technology corporations, those companies have needed to build and expand datacenters specifically for AI processing. This requires massive amounts of critical computer components: Memory (RAM), Storage Drives (SSDs), Graphics Cards (GPUs), and Processors (CPUs). As a result, the companies that manufacture these components have scaled back consumer production (or in some cases, such as Micron/Crucial, entirely ceased consumer-grade production) to focus on providing higher-margin components for these AI datacenters.

Increased material costs and recent logistics difficulties further exacerbate the issue. General shortages, price hikes, and supply chain issues have been problems for years in the component manufacturing space, even before recent supply and demand challenges.

So is there any sign of change on the horizon? Many see the current AI trend as a bubble, destined to pop similar to the dotcom bubble of the late 90s. There are signs of strain already on the AI industry; OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently announced they will end services on their video-generation technology Sora, with it being an enormous expense that was not widely used. Economic studies have shown that there is very little benefit to AI use, with no measurable impact to employment or productivity reported by nearly 90% of companies. But given the incredible amount of money tech corporations have poured into AI, it’s hard to see it going away any time soon.

In the meantime, businesses will have to be prepared to spend more on PC and server replacements. There is little chance that prices will decline significantly in the next year, so budgets and computer replacement plans will have to adjust accordingly. At Layered Systems, we understand the challenge this poses to small and midsize businesses.
