Windows 8 is right around the corner but many of us will continue to use Windows 7 for several years. If you are like us it seems like a computer never runs fast enough. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of Windows 7 until you have the budget to upgrade to a new PC with Windows 8.
1 – Uninstall programs you never use to free up disk space and defrag the disk drives
- Start –> Search –> Type in “Programs and Features”
- Uninstall unnecessary/unused applications
2 – Use the performance trouble-shooter which can automatically find and fix problems
- Start –> Search –> Type in “Troubleshooting”
- Under System Security Click “Check for performance Issues”
3 – Eliminate programs from startup you don’t need
By eliminating unnecessary applications from start up one can see a big improvement in their load time and free up resources. You can create a report to see what programs are starting on boot-up:
- Start –> Search –> Type in “msconfig” and hit enter
- Choose the tab named “Startup”
- Uncheck any programs you do not want to start with Windows
4 – Eliminate unwanted visual effects
All the visual effects are nice to look at but once the wow factor wears off you can turn off the extra fluff!
- Start –> Search –> Type in “Advanced System Settings”
- Under the “Performance” area click “Settings”
- Choose “Adjust for Best Performance”
5 – Restart Regularly
Restarting a PC is a great way to clear out its memory and ensure that any rogue processes and services that were started get shut down.
