Windows operating systems have a lifecycle of planned updates and eventual obsolescence – the final step of this lifecycle is appropriately called “End of Life.” After the End of Life (EOL) date, Microsoft no longer provides feature or, more importantly, security updates for these “dead” operating systems. In 2023, two major Windows products have seen or will see their EOL – Windows 8 (and 8.1) and Server 2012 (and 2012 R2).
Support for Windows 8 and 8.1 ended on January 10, 2023. Windows 8 in its original form did not see much adoption, and though 8.1 faired a bit better, it was still overshadowed for most of its lifecycle by the long-supported Windows 7. However, many new PCs sold between 2013 and 2015 shipped with Windows 8.1, and there may still be a few PCs clinging to life running 8 or 8.1. These PCs should be replaced as soon as possible, as they pose a security threat by remaining on any network. Given the age of anything running Windows 8, it is very likely not worth the effort (or even possible, depending on hardware) to bring these PCs up-to-date with Windows 11, and so it’s best to replace these machines completely.
Support for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will end on October 10, 2023. Unlike Windows 8, Server 2012 and 2012 R2 were widely adopted across businesses. Servers are responsible for critical functions in most businesses, including sign-on, file management, application licensing and hosting, and more. It is very important that servers are running supported operating systems to ensure they receive critical security updates, as new exploits are frequently found and patched. Unlike the Windows 8 PCs, it may be worthwhile to do an in-place upgrade on the same server hardware, as server hardware is built to last longer than the average PC. Upgrading to a recent server operating system, such as Server 2022, is preferable to ensure long-term support and functionality.
